 Abstract   The pre-design of a 800 kVA, 50 Hz line-side pulse modulated converter for traction equipment is described. The design procedure has been supported by modelling of the control system, computer simulation and measurements on a scaled 5 kW laboratory test model. A special pulse pattern is described, which enables the operation with a relatively high modulation frequency of 900 Hz with accept able switching losses. A combination of active and passive filtering is used for the suppression of line-currents with signalling frequencies. The measurement results from the scaled laboratory model are given; they serve as a design guide for the 800 kVA version of the converter.
