Abstract |
A combined system of shunt passive and small rated series active filter acts as a "harmonic isolator" between the source and the load, thus in principle, eliminating the problems of using only shunt passive filters or shunt active filters. The combined system is suitable for harmonic compensation of large VA rated loads because the required rating of the series active filter is much smaller than that of a conventional shunt active power filter, and hence has greater practicability. However the features and the performance of the combined system are greatly influenced by the filtering algorithm employed for the series active filter. lt is shown in this paper that active filtering using a synchronous reference frame (SRF) based compensator achieves excellent harmonic compensation and good decoupling between the source and the load, as compared to an instantaneous reactive power (lRP) theory based compensator. Extensive simulation results are used to establish the superior performance of the synchronous reference frame (SRF) based compensator. The series active filter is being realised using a high bandwidth IGBT based Resonant DC link (RDCL) voltage source inverter. |
