Abstract |
This paper presents an experimental investigation of an advanced High Voltage Direct Current
(HVDC) power transmission system based on Pulse-Width Modulated (PWM) two-level Voltage
Source Converters (VSC’s) using Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBT’s). The system’s
principles of operation and the associated control are described. The performance of the said system is
studied under normal conditions on a scaled down laboratory prototype. Experimental results of the
steady-state operation with bi-directional active power flow and various power factors are presented. It
is shown that for the HVDC system with VSC technology, active power flow can be easily reversed
without changing the DC voltage polarity, and reactive power support at each converter station can be
provided simultaneously. |
