Preferably, in electric vehicles, the drive system components are sized to comply with performancerequirements while simultaneously striving to keep energy losses and cost down. One of the parametersaffecting the inverter's losses is the selected switching frequency. Hence it could also play a role duringsizing. In this paper an electric vehicle IGBT power module is sized using various switching frequencies, against a scaled reference electric machine. As a tool for this assessment a scalable power module modelis suggested, that scales with current rating. Finally, the impact on drive cycle efficiency is determinedfor various inverter ratings designed for different switching frequencies. |
