   A Single-Phase Direct AC-AC Modular Multilevel Converter for Railway Power Conditioning   [View]

 Abstract   This paper proposes a single-phase direct ac-ac modular multilevel converter (MMC) with the capability of equal frequency operation for railway power conditioning applications. The proposed MMC can be regarded as a hybrid topology combining the conventional single-phase modular multilevel matrix converter (MMMC) and an additional shunt branch. Owing to the extra degree of freedom provided by the shunt branch, the control efforts for branch energy balancing and power conditioning can be eased. The basic operating principle and control strategy are described. Effectiveness of the proposed topology is validated by the simulation results.
