Abstract   Diesel electric propulsion systems are nowadays utilised in large cruise ships, icebreakers and special purpose vessels. In order to perform the optimum design of the electrical drive it's necessary to take into account the following factors: dependability, space saving and electric performances. The term dependability encompasses the concepts of reliability, availability, maintainability, safety and performability (the first four terms are commonly referred to as RAMS). Different electric configurations are analysed as far as dependability is concemed. The dependability study is performed by means of both combinatorial models and Petri nets simulation. This approach is useful at both design and validation stage.
