 Abstract   This paper describes selected issues concerningrealization of energy storage system (ESS) designed to operate inpower distribution system. This paper presents a modularapproach of 300 kVA power converter operating withsuperconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES), which giveshigh dynamics together with high power and suitable capabilityfor instantaneous energy storage. Analysis and simulationstudies of selected power converter topologies are conducted,which are also commonly used to connect electric powerdistribution system and energy storage system. In order to verifyassumed technical parameters, a single prototype of ESS ispresented together with experimental results. Proposed solutionsupports scalability of the system in power as well as in energystorage capacity of ESS. Presented full scale prototype module isa result of conducted analysis and proposition for futurerenewable energy storage installations.
