Abstract   This paper describes a new Efficiency Optimisation Algorithm for variable-speed Switched Reluctance Motor drives operated in current control. A thorough analysis of the average torque production in current controlled SR drives is made with respect to the parameters current reference, angular velocity and firing angles. It is shown that a true optimum efficiency can be found using the tum-off angle in a slow control loop, while operating with a faster closed-loop speed control. The power flow is measured and minimised in the DC-link, while the speed controller maintains a constant output power. Simulation results show up to 6% gain in efficiency. Test results show on-line efficiency maximisation without loosing dynamic performance. They also show that a global minimum is reached by the on-line search. The method established is completely independent of the machine topology and operating conditions, and as such applicable to any current controlled variable-speed Switched Reluctance Motor drive.
