Abstract   This paper examines the design of high performance carrent controllers for the Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM). Very little work has been published on this subject to date. The particular characteristics of the SRM which affect carrent control performance are examined. Two widely used techniques, fixed frequency Pulse-Width-Modulation (PWM) and hysteresis, are examined and their suitability assessed. Results from detailed digital simulation of both techniques are given, along with measured results from the hysteresis controller. The hysteresis controller is shown to be capable of superior dynamic response but has the drawback of frequency-wild behaviour. PWM carrent control is viable for many applications, where rapid dynamic response is not of paramount importance, and its constant switching frequency is a significant advantage.
