Abstract |
Environmental considerations make it increasingly difficult to plan and erect new transmission lines and power generation plants. FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) provides devices for enhanced use of AC transmission networks., The Static VAr Compensator (SVC) has become a well proven technique, more than 100 units are operating in transmission systems worldwide. The combination of conventional series capacitor and thyristor-controlled reactors - an element well-known from SVC applications - was introduced into a
transmission system in 1992. This first three-phase installation of Advanced Series Compensation (ASC) demonstrates that new FACTS devices using HVDC and SVC thyristor valve
technology can be designed and operated successfully. It is expected that an increased number of FACTS equipment will be installed to solve some of today's and tomorrow's problems in AC systems. |
