Abstract |
A new hybrid AC current limiting device (AC-HCLD) with replaceable contact, counter current injection circuit and electrodynamic drive is considered as a short circuit protection for diode rectifier and thyristor converter. The principle of operation and short circuit current limiting features of the AC-HCLD are described. It has been shown in the
paper that a new approach to the short circuit protection of AC line commutated converter would be possible. lt is based
on the fact that the Joule - Lenz integral I2t of the AC-HLCD let - through current is very small in comparison to the I2t of other current limiting devices and fuses. The 3- phase HCLD at the AC supply side could replace the commonly
used individual fuse protection for semiconductor valves and protect the converter against internal faults. Operation of the HCLD protection at breaking internal fault currents in a 3- phase bridge thyristor converter is illustrated by voltage and current wave forms, obtained from computer simulation. |
