Abstract   This paper describes a shunt active filter for installation on power distribution feeders by electric power utilities in the near future. The purpose of the shunt active filter based on voltage detection is not to provide harmonic compensation of dispersed nonlinear loads, but to damp harmonic propagation in a power distribution system which is subjected to harmonic pollution caused by harmonic resonance and a number of unidentified harmonic-producing loads. Theory and simulation verifY that the active filter is cost-effective in harmonic damping throughout a radial power distribution feeder of 6.6 kV when it is installed at the end terminal of a primary line of the feeder.
