A Unified Power Flow Controller, UPFC is able to control the throughput real and
reactive powers independently. At present the worldwide interest is focused on the voltage source type UPFC. This paper introduces a new concept of a UPFC which is based on a current source and converter controlled phase-shifting transformer. For this reason the control scheme for the
complex power flow becomes simpler and more independent of the network impedances. New operating methods of a decoupled reactive power compensation scheme and load flow control are deduced from the operating charts of the current source type UPFC. The results of the full UPFC operation, as described, are verified by measurements on a test model with a transient network analyser. The test results show the ability of the current source type UPFC to apply dynamic reactive power compensation and load flow control simultaneously in a real network configuration. |
