 Abstract   This paper presents the design of a multipole, 6-phase brushless DC motor proposed for Electric Power Assisted Steering control in high performance automotive applications. Two sets of 3-phase windings which are physically decoupled are employed for this safety critical application. The torque pulsation is analysed using Finite Element and Fourier harmonic methods. An improved machine design is suggested to achieve smooth torque operation.
