Abstract   This paper discusses special purpose linear drives. The speciality of these linear drives is the large air gap of machines. Therefore the heat losses are also relatively high. Commonly, in electrical devices, such· as power converters, transmission lines, electrical machines, heat losses are undesired and cut down the efficiency of energy consumption. However, in some applications, energy conversion can be considered as multi purpose and the converted thermal energy as useful. For example, in the magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) machines, which work under high temperature conditions, the energy losses in the electrical to mechanical conversion process can be used for the rated temperature maintenance. A similar task can be solved for a linear motor based transportation system used in the casting industry. Here, higher temperature guarantees the quality of the casting process. In addition, temperature regulation or automatic control can be used.
