Abstract   To improve the surface quality of the steel plate, non-contacting conveyance method using electromagnetic force has been investigated. The non-contacting conveyance system consists of electromagnets for propulsion and linear induction motors (LIMs) for levitation. In this system, however, a lot of electromagnets have to be controlled to realize stable levitation of a steel plate. In t'his paper, first of all, the design of supporting system for a practical steel plate conveyance is performed. To make the non-contacting conveyance system simple, the non-contacting conveyance system which utilizes not only thrust force of a LIM for propulsion but also normal force for levitation is proposed. The LIM for steel plate conveyance system is designed by taking the influence of magnetic saturation into account and the levitation system by LIMs is compared with the system by electromagnets.
