Abstract   A discrete-time large-signal dynamic model of closed-loop PWM switching regulators is derived. No small-ripple approximation is assumed. The model can be used to study regulator operation stability, bifurcation, and subharmonic phenomenon. It is demonstrated in an example of a buck regulator operating in continuous conduction mode with output voltage feedback. The bifurcation behaviour of the regulator with proportional and proportional-plus-integral feedback is investigated. An iterative mapping technique is used to analyse the unstable behaviour of the regulator when it is subject to large parameter changes. The theoretical predictions are favourably verified with measurements. The proposal can be used as a tool for control design of power converters.
