Abstract   As a kind of important loads on electric vehicles(EVs), brushless DC motors(BLDCMs) encounter the problems of large starting inrush current, high security hidden trouble caused by capacitive residual voltage, etc. Solid state power controllers(SSPCs) sh ow advantage in handling such trouble. In this paper, SSPC and BLDCM are modeled. The interaction between SSPC and BLDCM is analyzed during motor starting period, capacitance charging-discharging process, motor loading process and short-circuit protection process. Power quality is evaluated in 270VHDC system. Results show that SSPC can effectively inhibit BLDCM starting inrush current and eliminate the security risk of high capacitor residual voltage. SSPC can trip immediately when BLDCM is overloaded severely or short-circuit. It’s feasible to apply SSPC in HVDC system of electric vehicle.
