Abstract   Modularity offers large potentials to the rising demands of modern power supply systems. It ensures an advanced level of flexibility and adaptability required by expanding grids. In this paper an introduction to modular design strategies in combination with standardized interfaces is given. Differences in application of modular design strategies to Hybrid Power System (HPS) hardware and software are discussed. An intensified application of decentralized energy converters is expected in future. By modular design this leads to the availability of new production techniques. Wide product and various application ranges in combination with large production quantities require design strategies adjusted to this circumstances. The modular design approach support this by offering flexibility also during the entire product lifecycle. As further effect, the reliability of decentralized HPS can be improved significantly. The introduced modular design strategy was successfully applied to an exemplary PV-battery HPS. The implemented pilot system proved the practicability, efficiency and reliability of modular designed HPS for modern expanding power supply systems.
